for a Mobile, Connected World
[Lili Cheng (Microsoft); Caterina Fake (Ludicorp); Amy Jo Kim
(SocialDesigner.Net); Mena Trott (Six Apart); Evan Williams (Odeo)]
Innovative end-user tools are emerging as broadband Internet
connectivity and intelligent digital devices become increasingly
pervasive. From blogging to online photo sharing to podcasting,
new services and platforms seemingly appear out of nowhere to take
advantage of the capabilities that now exist. Most of these applications
leverage two key elements of the new environment -- community and
mobility. We'll delve into those issues to separate sustainable
phenomena from fads.

Panel: Only Connect
[Bill Schlough (SF Giants); Peter Sisson (Teleo);
Stuart Henshall (Skype Journal)]
We've been hearing for years about convergence, broadband, and wireless.
Yet now, with developments in all three areas, the basic assumptions that
have governed telecom for many years are suddenly unraveling. How will
developments such as unlicensed wireless and software-based voice over
IP undermine the old communications order? Perhaps more importantly, how
can they help to build a new one that is both viable and vibrant?

Panel: Connected Play
[Raph Koster (Sony Online), JC Herz (Joystick
Nation), Philip Rosedale
(Linden Lab), Dennis Fong (Xfire)]
Games matter -- even for those who neither play nor
make them. Several million people spend hours in massively multiplayer
virtual worlds.
Games are pushing the frontiers of technology in semiconductors,
digital media, collaboration, and visualization. They are significant
cultural phenomena, something smart marketers (and the military)
are starting to recognize. And the annual market for "virtual
assets" is already an estimated $880 million. What tools and
techniques will cross the line from virtual to real or the reverse?
How will developments in the games world influence the broader tech
and business worlds?

Distributed Business
[Philip Evans (Boston Consulting Group); Julius
Genachowski (IAC/InterActiveCorp); Dick Hardt (Sxip
Identity);
Greg Lloyd (Traction Software); Sean Park (DrKW)]
At every level, business is becoming more decentralized. More people
are working as free agents and telecommuters. More employees are
collaborating across organizations and distances with distributed
work teams. More companies are directly coordinating with their
suppliers, partners, and customers. And the growth of outsourcing
shows no signs of slowdown. How must software and communications
tools adapt to this new business reality? How can individuals manage
their identities across a growing range of applications, roles,
and business relationships?

Panel: Your
Attention Please
[Moderator: Steve Gillmor (ZDNet); Glenn Reid (FiveAcross); Doree
Duncan Seligmann (Avaya); David Sifry (Technorati); Linda Stone
(Ex-Microsoft)]
Attention is one immutably scarce quantity in a world of increasing
abundance. As everything becomes connected, and connectivity becomes
increasingly widespread, the challenge in no longer getting more
information, but getting less. We need tools, systems, and practices
to help us cope with information overload. Fortunately, advances
in this area are coming from several directions, ranging from
communications systems to search-based technologies for managing
and organizing information.

Panel: Reinventing
Media
[Moderator: Dan Gillmor (Grassroots Media,
Inc.); Jeremy Allaire
(BrightCove); Suranga Chandratillake (Blinkx); Lawrence Gelburd
(Wharton)]
Peer-to-peer file-sharing and the music industry was just the
tip of the iceberg. The rise of blogs has created a vast network
of intentional and unintentional amateur journalists, challenging
established media outlets as information gatekeepers. Meanwhile,
the Net is rapidly becoming a video platform, challenging television
and its deep influences on daily life around the world. How will
the rise of citizen journalism and the videonet change the nature
of media? What will it take for this new new media to become a
true mass phenomenon? And what will be the business and social
consequences if it does?
